Newton Gully Screen Society at Wine Cellar 4

For the third instalment in this series of free film events, the Newton Gully Screen Society presented a double feature of animated films: Walt Disney's classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) followed by Jan Švankmajer's surrealist, stop-motion adaptation Alice (1988).

This pairing encouraged audiences to consider the juxtaposition between the origins of mainstream animation and the darker, more unsettling narratives of Eastern European experimental cinema.

For its 2008 Spring season, the Newton Gully Screen Society offered a series of six free film screenings, presented every second Wednesday in the back room of The Wine Cellar, off Karangahape Rd. Organised in collaboration with The Dust Palace, this initiative continued NGSS' mission to bring a range of cinematic experiences to the public, building on the earlier Cinema Obscura events held at Cross St Studios, curated by Sean Monro.
