Newton Gully Screen Society at The Wine Cellar 1
The Newton Gully Screen Society launched its Spring season with a screening of Tod Browning's classic, avant-garde horror, Freaks (1932). The film, inspired by Browning's time with a travelling circus, famously cast real circus performers, pushing the work beyond conventional horror and creating a startling document of its era. An additional documentary was screened that evening, providing historical and critical context on Brownings' film.
For its 2008 Spring season, the Newton Gully Screen Society offered a series of six free film screenings, presented every second Wednesday in the back room of The Wine Cellar, off Karangahape Rd. Organised in collaboration with The Dust Palace, this initiative continued NGSS' mission to bring a range of cinematic experiences to the public, building on the earlier Cinema Obscura events held at Cross St Studios, curated by Sean Monro.
