For the inaugural Cinema Obscura event, Cross St Studios presented Paul Grimault’s animated film Le Roi et l’Oiseau (1980) alongside The Brothers Quay’s stop-motion film Street of Crocodiles (1986).

Cinema Obscura was a series of regular cinematic events, curated by Cross St Studios member Sean Monro and hosted in the gallery space. Each event paired a short film with a feature-length film, aimed at showcasing a range of cinematic expressions and supporting emerging local filmmakers. These screenings were always free and open to the public.
